From Xabi Alonso to Victor Valdes: The Liga stars whose contracts expire in 2014

A host of big-name players could leave their clubs for nothing come the end of the season, so Goal gives you the full list of players who can talk to other teams starting Jan. 1.
January is a time for reflection, renewal and change. And with 2014 just around the corner, many players across Europe will be either playing to earn new contracts at the end of the current campaign - or planning a move to pastures new.

Spain's situation is uncertain for many people - and that includes the soccer industry. At the budget end of La Liga, some sides will need to check their finances before handing out deals to players soon to be out of contract, while others may simply be surplus to requirements.

Athletic Bilbao has moved to extend the contracts of three of their more important players, with captain Andoni Iraola penning a new deal recently, along with Ibai Gomez and Carlos Gurpegi. Also in the Basque Country, Real Sociedad has secured the services of defender Ion Ansotegi for one more year. Villarreal also moved to tie up talismanic midfielder Cani for four more years earlier this month, while Atletico Madrid has a verbal agreement with the in-form Raul Garcia that should be announced in January.

At Real Madrid, Xabi Alonso continues to mull over an extension, with coach Carlo Ancelotti hopeful the midfielder will stay beyond the summer. Barcelona, however, will lose goalkeeper Victor Valdes at the end of the season, while his understudy Jose Manuel Pinto may also leave as his contract expires in June. The Blaugrana do hope to announce new agreements with young defenders Marc Bartra and Martin Montoya in the coming weeks, however.

Here, Goal gives you a club-by-club guide on all of the Liga players who could become free agents come June 30, leaving them free to speak to other clubs in January.
